Managing HIV/AIDS Therapy in Treatment-Experienced Patients
Statement of Need/Program Overview

Protease inhibitors are an important part of combination therapy. Clinicians and pharmacists can increase the effectiveness of protease inhibitors by learning more about the issues involved with using them, such as drug interactions and patient sensitivity. In addition, the appropriate diagnosis and treatment of HIV patients with hypertension and impaired renal function, specifically among population segments more likely to have these conditions, will be discussed.

Patient compliance to treatment is a significant aspect of combination therapy. Noncompliance, caused largely by pill burden and medication intolerance, can contribute to HIV drug resistance and ultimately to increased mortality and morbidity. Patients are more likely to comply with anti-HIV therapies that are effective and that have simple regimens and minimal adverse effects. The newer agents discussed in this program may increase patient compliance because they have reduced pill burden and fewer adverse effects than previous agents.
