Initiating HIV/AIDS Therapy in Treatment-Naïve Patients:
HIV/HCV Coinfection Case Study

Case Presentation: Nicholaos C. Bellos, MD

A 33-year-old female presents for consultation on the management of her HIV/HCV coinfection. Prior to this, she had started HAART briefly with AZT/3TC + NFV, which was later changed to AZT/3TC + LPV/r. Saying she was not ready, she decided to discontinue all therapy. In the past, she was treated with high-dose interferon and ribavirin three-times-a-week; both doses were later lowered due to significant toxicities. Her HCV genotype was 1b. At presentation, she had no specific complaints except some anxiety over starting therapy again. Some axillary and epitrochlear adenopathy were noted.
